NASA astronaut hopes to stage `out of this world` concert
"A NASA astronaut is hoping to stage a concert that is literally out of this world, and plans on doing it with the help of Irish band The Chieftains and British band Jethro Tull.
Astronaut Catherine Coleman said she prefers to create music with other people, but unfortunately she is the only flautist among the six aboard the International Space Station.
Coleman, who said she enjoyed creating her 'own little world' with music, has now decided to put flute music on in the background, and play along before she returns to Earth in May.
She blasted off Kazakhstan in December for a six-month period orbiting the earth, and she took along a priceless Irish concert flute, given to her by a man who is considered to be a star himself by traditional music lovers."

Space serenade: Astronaut has 4 flutes in orbit
"CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Musical astronaut Catherine Coleman has plenty of flutes to pick from aboard the International Space Station.
One is her own. Two belong to members of the Irish group, The Chieftains. And one belongs to the flutist with the Jethro Tull band.
'A pretty well–rounded spectrum, and I am having a great time up here with them,' Coleman said.
On Wednesday, she played a couple tunes for radio and TV interviewers.
Space station commander Scott Kelly, meanwhile, said his twin brother made the right decision in returning to shuttle training.
Astronaut Mark Kelly officially resumed training this week after taking a leave of nearly a month to care for his wounded wife, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. He will be in charge of the April flight of Endeavour.
At the space station, Coleman is the only flutist among the six–member crew. So while she prefers creating music with other people, she puts flute music on in the background and plays along whenever she has spare time."

Tom Mcelvogue and Paddy Kerr
"Tyneside flute player Tom McElvogue finally coaxes his debut collection into broad daylight, seven long years
after he recorded it. As a tune composer, McElvogue has already made his mark with Lúnasa’s Kevin Crawford, Capercaille’s Michael McGoldrick and Karen Tweed, who have fostered and promoted his work widely.
The Long Hard Road bears ample testament to the disappearing virtue of patience. McElvogue’s conservatism in the tune-naming department ( Jig in G 0 1 as a title will hardly linger long in the memory) belies a fluid facility with both uncluttered composition and a fluent, unforced playing style. Accompaniment from bouzouki and bodhrán player, guitarist and composer Paddy Kerr is equally unerring: restrained in a way that bears comparison with Dennis Cahill’s intuitive ease alongside Martin Hayes. Essential listening for anyone with an ear cocked for finesse. See tommcelvogue.com"
